Spotted: the Oldest License Plate In MA

This 400k Lexus LFA was recently spotted at Herb Chambers in Sudbury, MA. Super rare car, no question. What I really want to know, though, is how you get the # 1 license plate in MA. According to Wikipedia, Massachusetts and West Virginia were the first states to issue plates, in 1903. So at least in theory, this makes it the oldest license plate in the entire U.S. I think the plate should have gone on an American car. It would look really good on a Viper SRT10!

  1. Rhode Island holds a lottery for low-number license plates. It's a weird status thing. Don't ask me, I'm a MA native. :-)

  2. According to the same Wikipedia link, the most expensive license plate sold at an auction in the U.S. was for 14 million dollars. I bet the license plate on this exotic Lexus LFA is worth a lot more than the car!!

  3. Why are Lexus LFAs always in the ugliest colors?

It's a united we stand plate first issued in 2002. This guy must've been the first on the list for the plate! He's supporting our troops and local police and fire departments.

  6. Will is correct.

The license plate, and the car, belong to Herb Chambers himself. he bought the rights for the #1 United We Stand plate in 2002 at a benefit auction for $100K or $200K from what I recall. The plate is usually affixed to whatever latest expensive car he drives.

  7. Nicolas, spot on! My friend Jerry who sent along the picture said he found out the plate was purchased at an auction for 150k. Now I really want this plate. No cop could ever write you a ticket with a plate like that!!

  8. According to this Lexus Enthusiast link, the Lexus LFA Nurburgring edition ran the Nurburgring in 7:14. Very Impressive number! On a lighter note, did anyone else know that Lexus and Enthusiast could be used in the same sentence?!
