How to Drive Calabogie - Onboard Video and Instructions

Calabogie is one of the most fun and addictive tracks I have driven. Here are turn-by-turn instructions on how to drive it:

PIT OUT - You enter the track on the left side of the front straight. The concrete pit wall is very high and as you go on the track, you cannot see cars coming down the front straight. Watch carefully for the signal from pitout. Stay to the left. The blend line is very tight - wider cars, beware.

KINK - This is one of the most exhilarating turns at the track when attacking it at full speed. If you are just coming on the track, stay to the left all the way to the next turn. If you are at speed coming down the front straight, apply light to medium brakes on the approach, settle the car down, and be gentle on the throttle at the apex. The Kink is intriguing, and especially in the rain it will catch some drivers by surprise as the terrain drops quickly downhill and emphasizes the tendency of a tail-happy car to oversteer. Track all the way out of the Kink and don't jerk the car back to the left for the next turn (Jacques).

Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in a BMW E36 M3 - Part II

By Jamie Melhuish

Here is Part II of the series. If you missed Part I, you can catch up here.

Friday - Practice Middle Section
Up at 3 AM. The middle section starts from Glen Cove and runs to Devil's playground. The Honda Odyssey towed the M3 on the trailer up to Glen Cove at 11,440 feet. No worries. First run was OK, finding it hard to get around the hairpins. Front end grip is pretty good but the inside rear wheel is spinning a little, though not as much now since we stiffened the front anti-roll bar. This section of the course is hard for my car since it is a stop/start drag from each hairpin up the steepest section of the hill.

Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in a BMW E36 M3 - Part I

By Jamie Melhuish

On August 12th this year, I raced my naturally aspirated 1995 BMW E36 M3 at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado. Competitors came from all over the US and the world: Russia, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and France. I raced in the Time Attack division (street cars modified for racing).

Pro Race Flagging: The Inside Scoop from an ALMS Flagger

by EJ Smith

If you're a road racing fan like me, you probably watched the American Le Mans Series' Northeast Grand Prix this Summer. Maybe you sat on the couch with a cold one and caught the race in progress on ESPN2, or maybe you were at Lime Rock and caught it live, but how close to the action did you get? Did you get to feel the percussive shot of a GT Corvette's upshift hit you in the chest as it accelerated up No-name Straight? Did you get chunks of rubber hitting you in the arm and chest as Patrick Long did his qualifying laps in the Lizard Motorsports Porsche? Or maybe you got to tattle on one of the Patron Ferraris as it blew the Uphill chicane, took the classic course's Uphill path, and then hit the tire wall slalom meant to slow down scofflaws that didn't make the 90 degree right-hander like their fellow competitors did... OK, like some of their competitors did.

You didn't get to see Skip Barber's car blow the tranny
and catch on fire during show laps, did you?  Flaggers did!

Here's one simple way to practice drifting without wasting your tires!

Who would have thought? It's such a simple idea.

Pussy Riot, Sex Pistols Edition

There are a lot of weird band names out there. But who in their right mind thinks they can put a girls' group called Pussy Riot in jail and get away with it!? That name makes even the Sex Pistols sound tame. If they were pussies, they would probably look something like this:

Stuck Throttle in Fifth Gear: Zero-to-Crash in Fifteen Seconds Flat

Another very scary crash at this year's Pikes Peak Climb!

Three big positives, though: the driver was OK, none of the spectators standing by so close got injured, and the camera did survive too!

Pictures of the Pikes Peak Car That Fell off a Cliff

Looking at the pictures of what's left from the Evo that fell off the cliff at Pikes Peak's Devil's Playground, it is absolutely amazing that the driver and co-pilot did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. Not even a broken bone!

The shop that built this roll cage should be put in charge of all road cars' safety development!

Pikes Peak Car Falls off a Cliff - Not for the Faint of Heart

Jeremy Foley and his co-driver go off at Pikes Peak's Devils Playground - at exactly the same spot another car fell off the cliff last year. Both were taken to the hospital and fortunately released without life-threatening injuries.

Motocross Chaos Ends up with a Ghost Bike in a Pond!

Somebody please help me get off the floor!!! This is by far the sloppiest motocross I have seen anywhere: riders falling all over themselves, barely avoiding each other when they are down, and then to top it all off: the rider with the helmet cam falls off the bike 2 feet before the finish! He rushes to get back on the bike and save his position and the bike runs away from him into ... a pond to the right. LMAO!!!

Ice Ice Baby - 1 of Only 30 Frozen Grey M3s

Here are more pictures of one of the only 30 Frozen Grey BMW M3 coupes sold in the U.S. market. These were taken taken during my visit to Turner Motorsport today. Whether you love or hate the idea of an exclusive M3 color, there is no denying that frozen grey looks absolutely striking in person! It's very cool how the color changes depending on the viewing angle and the light.

You can find the specs for the Frozen Grey M3 in this write-up I did last year. I still get a chuckle every time I see Internet users searching for "vanilla frosty" and "frozen yellow" M3s!!

Drifting Math: 3 in the Air + 1 in the Dirt = Good Show!

I'd give it a perfect 10 if the driver had stuck his arm through the window.
Maybe add drifting to the Olympics as another obscure sport (heavyweight judo?) Or jiu-jitsu, karate or taekwondo if they are ever added as Olympic sports.
