2012 (European) Track Car of the Year
Evo magazine ran 10 exciting sports cars against each other at the track and put together this entertaining video which ranks them based on lap times. Too bad they mislabeled the rankings, though - aside from the GT86 Toyobaru, every car they tested was European. They should have called it 2012 EUROPEAN Car of the Year. I can think of a few American sports cars that would have easily ranked in the top 3 based on their track times!

The 2012 Racing Season Is Over!
Today's incredible F1 race at Interlagos, Brazil marks
the end of the racing season.
Unfortunately, this is all the racing we have left
between now and the 2013 Rolex 24 in January:
The Rolex 24 can't come soon enough. We'll be there to cover it again.

Fragile Future for Formula 1 in the U.S.?
Posted by Gary R.
Pictures by JameyPricePhoto.com
Last week saw Formula One's return to the U.S. at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. And what a race it was! Bernie Ecclestone in his genius has finally got the formula right for the Formula. Unlike other runaway races where one driver or team simply dominates to the point where the loyal fan ends up watching to see who competes for third place, this has been a season of wheel to wheel racing. The driver lineup is like no other. Sunday's podium was adorned with three champions! All the scrutinizing and adjusting of the rules has made the playing field very competitive while not hampering the technological development of what is the most competitive engineering outside of the space/defense industries. F1's return to the U.S., the biggest consumer of entertainment globally, couldn't have come at a better time perhaps. With the growth of NASCAR audiences waning and even trending downward, as well as America's darling open wheeled series, Indy Car, in upheaval, it would seem that this is a perfectly positioned re-entry point to a market that has been historically very tough for F1 to crack.

Thanksgiving Snuck up on Me This Year!
Eat turkey. Cranberry sauce. Stuffing (lots of it!) Gravy (pour it on, please). Cornbread. Corn on the cob. APPLE PIE!! Watch football. Nap. Repeat until you fall into a turkey-induced coma.
Thanksgiving is easily my favorite holiday! Except it snuck up on me this year. The Coupe still sits in a cold garage with Nitto NT01s and race pads form the October event at NHMS; the E46 325i's studded snows have been sitting in a stack waiting to go on the car; And my wife's car's snow tires... wait, I need to figure out where I put those last Spring.
I was planning on getting some of this car stuff done early Thanksgiving morning when my wife asked me nicely last night not to do ANY car work on Thanksgiving and to help with the cooking instead. Very reasonable request, no doubt! I should have offered. It would have been a small gesture of appreciation for the 20 days I schlep my butt around racetracks and autocross events every year.

Common Sense Defined: Fantastic Interview with Kimi Raikkonen
I absolutely love this interview with Kimi Raikkonen! It's a great opportunity for everyone to take a step back, reflect, filter out the noise, and focus on the things that really matter in life.
Reposting from formula1.com:
It’s no secret that Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen isn’t a fan of long-winded media interviews - which is why we thought our quick-fire Inside Line format would be perfect for the Finn. And so it proved, with the 2007 world champion and 2012 Abu Dhabi winner providing brief but enlightening answers. What did we learn? For starters he loves steam, sushi and salmiak…
Q: What keeps you awake at night?
Kimi Raikkonen: Nothing keeps me awake. I have the ability to sleep well, wherever I am.
Q: If you could banish one thing from your life - for the rest of your life - what would that be?
KR: There is nothing to be banished.
Q: What’s been your most valuable life lesson?
KR: Never give up.
Q: What do you admire?
KR: Those boys from 1960s and early ‘70s in F1. Drivers made from steel in cars made of wood.
Q: If you could give your younger self some advice what would it be?
KR: Never give up.
Q: If your racing career ended this season what would you do with the rest of your life?
KR: I have some plans in my mind. I have a life outside racing as well, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world for me. (laughs)
Q: What animal best reflects your personality?
KR: My German Shepherd dog, Aksu.
Q: What is more important than winning?
KR: Health.

Quick Takes on the F1 Austin Race
Formula 1 in the U.S. is like a white elephant: it looks pretty and interesting, we just don't know what to do with it. As Jeremy Clarkson tweeted today, "I'm very much enjoying the baffled look on many faces in the crowd at Austin." And according to Australian Mark Webber, last night he was complimented on his amazing English by a woman at the VIP dinner!
There is virtually no overlap between F1 and NASCAR fans: the Austin race was held at the same time as NASCAR's final race for the season in Homestead. Furthermore, the Austin race took place at the same time as the Cowboys played in Dallas and the Texans played in Houston. Ironically, F1 management's target audience for the U.S. Grand Prix is ... the rest of the world.

Why You Should Watch the Austin F1 Grand Prix
You're not an F1 fan, I get it. The driver names are unpronounceable, they speak with weird accents, the cars barely ever pass each other, for some strange reason they turn left AND right, they have these things called DRS, KERS (or was it curse?) instead of plain simple pushrods, and even the commentators are from somewhere else. How do you relate to a race like that?!

Best Car Mod for Five Hundred Bucks!
by Gary R.
You finally did it. Everything came together in the end and your Subaru WRX STI sits in your driveway. It is beautiful and sounds sweet but it is like a blank canvas just the same. What improvements will you make first? After all, what real improvements can be made for five hundred bucks?
Well, before you take that credit card out, here are some things to think about. The car you agonized about and carefully chose is more than a pretty package, isnʼt it? After all, you got the real deal. So with that in mind, why not first tune the driver?
What ?!? Does the suggestion of this bruise what women call the fragile male ego? After all, this car was chosen because you have an appreciation for how it should be driven. While you may be discriminating in your car choice, that doesnʼt mean you really know how to get the most out of it. To prove this to you, consider this: do you think Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton would turn faster lap times than you on ANY given course? While it is true you are not likely to be the next Michael Schumacher, just about anyone with a scintilla of sense would rather have the skills of a back marker real race driver than a top 'performing' Fast and the Futile driver.

Dunlop Star Spec Direzza ZII: A Tire as Exciting as a Date with Scarlet Johansson! (UPDATED)
I've used a few sets of Dunlop Direzza Star Specs since they first came out and I absolutely love this tire! So when I recently got a flat, I automatically thought I'd buy Star Specs again until a friend told me "You should probably wait a few months, the next-gen Star Specs are coming out."
Now that got me excited! The next-gen Star Spec will be like the Scarlett Johansson of tires! See, I was running second and third in my autocross class back in '08 when I first switched from Michelin Pilot Sport II and the Star Specs improved my times by two seconds relative to other drivers in class. I won my class that year, as well as 3 of the 4 years after that. The change initially was so dramatic, at one point my competitors started asking each other if they should challenge my car to see what else I'd put in it! The Star Spec does not need a lot of heat to perform well, it provides great feedback, and it's very good in the wet. It's a fantastic autocross AND track tire with good life to boot. It's no surprise it was voted the best street tire by a landslide in OneHotLap's poll!
