2012: A OneHotLap Year in Review

Happy New Year, OneHotLap fans! Before we send off 2012, let's take a look back at the best that it had to offer on OneHotLap.

To start with, we showed what society thinks we do at high-performance driving events...

... and why a performance driving school might make sense if you drive like this. On a more serious note, here's a fantastic intro to performance driving for anyone looking to get involved, why choosing the right club matters, as well as how not to be a doofus at performance driving events. Here's also the best car modification for $500 to get you "started" on your car.

We explained what autocross is all about...

... and put together this very popular autocross dance video. We also pointed out that yelling "SHIT!" yields the best results out on the course. We demonstrated some advanced course design techniques, such as making use of trees instead of cones. We also showed what race car drivers are all about...

... and what 24 hours of LeMons is like, especially its New Hampshire edition.

Subaru Has Announced a Switch to 1-Wheel-Drive Cars!

2013 Subaru Impreza WRC 1-wheel drive test mule

Subaru has again bucked the automotive trends in 2012. In a year when most major manufacturers rushed to offer all-wheel-drive variants on all of their models, Subaru has started reducing the number of drive wheels. The company, which used to pride itself on the fact that it only makes all-wheel-drive cars, broke away from its core principles with the 2-wheel-drive BRZ sports coupe. The BRZ has seen rave reviews, even prompting Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson to name its identical GT86 twin Car of the Year!

A Short Guide to First Time Drifting

Expectation is about right except I would have also expected to see the driver stick his hand out of the window while drifting, 'cause, you know, that's waaay more cool and chicks dig it. It's every 16-yr old boy's dream... usually performed by kids twice that age. Reality is spot on - that's what you'd get in a high-powered car without driving skills.

Christmas Racing Poem, Watkins Glen Edition

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Glen,
Not a sports car was stirring, not even a Renn.
The stockings were hung on the Tirerack with care,
In hopes that Saint Nick soon would soon be there.

The kiddies were nestled all tucked in their Snuggies,
While Porsches and Mazdas raced in their heads;
Mom in her suit and I in my race Huggies,
Had tucked in the Lotus, and put away the Zeds.

When out on the road there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter:
Expecting to see a fast Bimmer roar by,
We raced to the window, my dear wife and I.

The moon on the chrome of her GT3,
Gave the brightness of noonday to our Christmas tree.
When what should my wondering eyes betray,
But Catrinel Menghia Fiats, pulling a sleigh.

And the 2012 Ebenezer Scrooge Award Goes to Circuit of The Americas (UPDATED)

Recent rumors that the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is cancelling all clubs' driving events have been confirmed in this Jalopnik article. Based on feedback from two driving clubs, COTA has canceled all rentals, club races, driver's education events and other track days for 2013. This in spite of the fact that the clubs had contracts in place and had already prepaid the full track rental fees for 2013.

It looks very likely based on this news that COTA is moving toward a private club type of organization similar to Monticello and Lime Rock Park. Only the F1 race, a new Grand Am race, as well as a few other high profile professional series' races have been confirmed for 2013. This move is a total blow to all driving enthusiasts who were very supportive of getting the track off the ground and COTA should be ashamed of it. This speaks to how little they value the help from all driving enthusiasts who stood up for this idea. They are apparently looking for COTA to be an exclusive track and not something that supports grassroots efforts.

The 2012 Ebenezer Scrooge award, therefore, goes to Circuit of The Americas!

December 21, 2012 UPDATE:

Circuit of The Americas provided updated information on pending track rentals:

Circuit of The Americas™ today announced that it would honor track rentals with four organizations that had booked track days and paid rental fees in advance. “We are moving ahead with these agreements and contacting clients so they can share this information with their members and customers,” Circuit spokesperson Julie Loignon said. “The executed rental agreements will limit the number of vehicles we have on track at any given time to ensure a fun and safe experience for participants, including any amateur drivers who will be participating. We regret the confusion that was caused as we worked through these issues with our clients and look forward to providing a one-of-a-kind experience to auto enthusiasts coming to Circuit of The Americas through our track rental program.”

Our take: This announcement does not say WHICH four organizations. More importantly, it does not mention any consideration for future rentals. It only addresses those which have been fully contracted and fully paid in advance in order to avoid lawsuits for breach of contract. NOTHING in this announcement gives us any comfort that COTA will be open to clubs once they fulfill their current contractual obligations.

Santa Spotted in a BMW M6 at a Driving School!!

Finally some great news this December! Santa has been spotted mastering his performance driving skills in this BMW M6 at a recent HPDE!! Apparently, he's a group A student, which gives me a lot of hope that everyone's presents will be delivered on time. Some corner workers have reported they heard him singing "Ho ho ho! Squeeze the throttle and track out, ho ho ho and a new set of Hoosiers!!"

I Got My Autocross Ass Kicked by a Friggin' Jeep Cherokee!!

Some things in life you can't explain. Things like Punxsutawney Phil. Or Donald Trump's hair. Or a Jeep Cherokee winning the Grassroots Motorsports $2012 Challenge autocross event.

Wait, there's no hope for the first two but this Jeep Cherokee thing - maybe we can try to explain it. The interior is gutted. All non-essential parts like radio and A/C are removed. It sports a 2,778-lb race weight with 230+ rwhp. That's right - one of the rare Jeep Cherokees ever sold with rear-wheel-drive from the factory. And even though this Jeep is a 2WD, it still has a solid front tube axle!

No matter what you brought to the $2012 challenge... you'd have to go home and tell your folks you got your ass handed to you on the autocross course by a Jeep Cherokee! It absolutely sticks to the ground, 3 wheels at a time! Note the complete lack of body roll at the autocross:

Driver Plays "Jingle Bells" with His Car's Throttle!!

Hat Tip to Scott M.

This video still cracks me up even after watching it a dozen times! Did I try playing Jingle Bells with my car's throttle after watching the video? You bet your ass that's the first thing I tried as soon as I got in my car. I can get the first couple of notes OK. Troubles is, my RPMs stay high up for a while after releasing the throttle, which is great for shifting gears and all but not so helpful when you want them to drop off fast for a more precise Jingle Bells tune. Goes without saying, I'll have to practice more in the next few days until Christmas.

Boston Bimmer Column: Fun with Yogi in Calabogie

I wrote about my Calabogie experience in my October/November column of Boston Bimmer (p.22). Here is an excerpt from it that I hope you will enjoy reading:

I’ve been going to Watkins Glen, Tremblant and NHMS every year for the past 10 years or so and even though I really enjoy these tracks, I was itching for a new challenge. I felt I was overdue: the One Lap of America tour, which I did in ’05, was the last opportunity I’d had to sample new exciting tracks.

Calabogie was top of my list as everyone who had driven it kept saying it’s a driver’s track and that it is very addictive. So this year I put it on my calendar bright and early and made sure to clear my work schedule in time for the event. Getting there is a bit of a hike: it was exactly 500 miles from my house. If you time the traffic right and only do one stop, you may be able to do it in 8 hours. If you are trailering or hit Montreal traffic, though, it can be a very long trip.

Don't Heel and Toe Like This Girl...

Learn the proper way to heel and toe.

The name of the technique is somewhat misleading as the heel does not really need to be involved as much as most people think. This is how Senna does it - note that he just rolls his foot to the right slightly diagonally as opposed to other drivers who don't move their toes at all and use the heel for the entire motion toward the gas pedal instead.

Autocross: Look Ahead FAIL!

Look ahead! LOOK AHEAD! LOOK AHEAD! Wait, don't look TOO far ahead. We can't see through the fog...

Hat Tip to Steve Scruffy

OneHotLap fan Steve Scruffy sent us these fantastic pictures and had this to say about his last autocross event of the season:

"We were required to run with our headlights on so the course workers could see where we were. I'm sure a few of the corner workers got the willies when they could hear me coming, and then hear the massive spin I had going 30 feet off the short runway, but not able to see me. BTW, that spin had the FSTD up until the end."
