First Snow Reported at a Racetrack for the Season!

Hat Tip to Roland R.

This is a picture from the Nurburgring from earlier today. It coincided with the freak snow storm we got for our last event in the Boston area exactly a year ago: October 27: Not a Good Day for R-comps!

What were the odds of this happening, Sandy??

Cake Wars: Porsche Vs. BMW

Earlier this month, we published a picture of this cake baked with love by Porsche enthusiasts. Not to be outdone, BMW fans have baked this delicious-looking cake!

We love the M insignia and "key-ready operation" here but does it compare to the detail on the Porsche cake? Just saying, a OneHotLap reader thought at first the Porsche cake looked like a Whoopee Cushion...

How To Drive NHMS Turn 1 (South Chicane)

After driving NHMS for 10 years, it still amazes me how many drivers (new and advanced alike) drive the outside line for the entry into Turn 1 (South chicane configuration).

Look people, Turn 1 at NHMS is a Type III turn (leading to another turn). Yes, the outside line taken by the 'Vette in this video would give you faster exit speed IF you could carry the speed on the way out of the turn (i.e. if it were a Type I turn). But this is a throwaway turn where you compromise the exit to a series of turns, so you could position the car for fastest exit out of 2b, which leads to a short straightaway. If you cannot carry the speed out of Turn 1, your best option is to shorten the distance traveled going into the turn. Taking the inside line cuts distance traveled by at least 40-50 feet compared to going on the outside.

Worst Flat-Spotting You Will Ever See

This is what happens when the ABS fails on a fast Corvette:

Hat Tip to Robert Z.

This happened to an experienced driver at Lightning a few weeks ago. As the driver approached a hide speed turn and hit his brakes, a message came up on the dash to remind him that there was a malfunction and he should go to the dealer. How's that for courtesy?

2012 SCCA Solo Nationals: Fast Run on The East Course

Here is a fast run on the East Course at the 2012 SCCA Solo Nationals with Hank Wallace in his E36 M3:

I love the real estate that course designers have at their disposal but the course does not strike me as very exciting. How does it compare to a typical course at your local club's events?

Porsche Charges What for Wheel Accessories?!

To put it in perspective, if you bought an $82k cake from Porsche, they would give you a "free" black and white Porsche logo. But if you wanted color on the cake, that would be at least a grand for this size logo:

"A Pretty Technical Course by PCA Standards..."

Here is a video of the FTD run from the PCA NER autocross event this weekend. Based on feedback from the Porsche guys at the event, this was a "pretty technical course by PCA standards, but still not as technical as the BMW ones."

My New Driving Buddy

The benefits are tremendous:

1. You can drive in the HOV Lane!
2. No self-respecting cop would ever pull you over for a violation!
3. If you need to make room between cars when switching lanes on the highway, you just wave Wario through the window.
4. You'd have a great instructor at the track. Guaranteed to get you a quick point-by. (And get the banana peels ready in case you need to force a point-by.

How Many Open Top Cars Can You Safely Fit on a Crowded Track?

This is an incredible video from the 2012 NARRC Runoffs (North Atlantic Road Racing Championships - a Northeast SCCA series) at Lime Rock Park.

Two SRF (Spec Racer Ford) cars went spinning right before the turn to the No-Name straight. The driver of the Miata in the video slowed down accordingly. But the driver of the blue #26 SRF who was following the Miata closely could not see the incident ahead and ran into the back of the Miata. Luckily, both drivers walked away.

Reportedly, the corner workers responded to both cars involved. The Porsche driver was extremely upset, unconcerned about his predicament but near tears thinking he'd injured or killed the SRF driver. The SRF driver was a bit shaken up, but had the presence of mind to ask about his missing GoPro that had been attached on the top of the roll hoop.
