My Ferrari 458 Spider Challenge to Chris Harris

Chris Harris does some of the most entertaining and informative car reviews. Not only does he write and present exceptionally well, he is one of the few automotive journalists who actually know how to drive FAST. And drive like a boss he did in this video!

"I've therefore decided that I'm going to drive this car like a complete idiot."

Yes, Chris, you are a year late for reviewing the Ferrari 458 Spider and that's OK -- we'd rather wait for a year to see your review than anybody else's!

And I have a challenge for you: if someone is gracious enough to drop off a 458 Spider in my driveway and forget the keys in it, I promise to get it around the entire track totally sideways. I'll just have to trade the cool-looking hat with a real helmet.

Race update: We didn't quite win this one... 
Early in the race my co-driver had this very nasty crash which put us out of the race before I got a chance to drive. Luckily he escaped with broken ribs but nothing more serious. The good news is the car is very fast - I was P3 in the AM practice on very old tires, heavy fuel load and no draft. We will re-group and be looking for victory at at our next race at the Circuit of The Americas!

Broken ribs? 
No problem, those will heal. 
Key thing is, the car is very fast!!

Ride on the passenger side with Boris Said in the Turner Motorsport M3 during the Rolex 24 practice. You really get good sense for the speed Boris is carrying when he blows by the slower cars. It's very cool to see how easy it is to rotate the GT car in the slower and medium speed turns -- the car could probably use more rear tire to be able to put all that power down!

A Real-Life Kart That Rivals Mario Kart's Jumps!

Unlike Mario Kart, catching air in your kart is not that much fun. There are no springs here to soften the landing and no shocks to control the rebound. This jump looks as cool as in Mario Kart but the landing is going to hurt just a bit. There's a small ridge in the pavement that might have caused this jump but how fast do you have to be going to catch so much air in a kart?! Amazing shot!

The 2013 Rolex 24 Is a Wrap: Final Results and Thoughts

The 51-st Rolex 24 is in the history books. It was probably not the most exciting race but easily one of the most historic: this was the last race of an era. Next year, the field will look very different with the combined Grand Am-ALMS field (more thoughts on the merger here).

There were some fascinatingly close battles in both the DP and GT classes. The fight for DP was won about an hour before the end of the race. After another full course caution, there were still 5 DP cars on the lead lap at the restart with some of the most aggressive drivers in any series: AJ Allmendinger who banged wheels with Alan McNish at 180 mph at last year's Rolex, Joao Barbosa who's an extremely talented and aggressive driver, and Montoya of jet dryer fame who wouldn't give anyone an inch. Barbosa jumped the restart and AJ attacked him back shortly but got his head handed to him on a platter: Barbosa pushed him wide into the grass, AJ lost nearly a lap, and Barbosa got a stop-and-go penalty for avoidable contact, leaving Montoya with a 22-second lead over Max Angelelli in the No. 10 Corvette DP at the finish. Ganassi Racing's BMW-powered car had a distinct straight line advantage and also pulled off the fastest lap of the race at 1:41.327. Montoya did a double stint to finish the race for BMW/Riley and drove flawlessly and consistently - very impressive at the end of a tense 24-hour race with so much at stake!

2013 Rolex 24: Only 6 Hours to Go!

Only 6 hours of racing remain in the 2013 Rolex 24. Amazingly, there are still 5 cars on the lead lap in the DP class and 6 cars in GT. Just as exciting, BMW, Corvette DP, and Ford are in a close battle for the top in DP, and Ferrari, Porsche, and Audi R8 are fighting really close in GT. The BMW-powered DP cars seem to have the straight line speed advantage. Michael Shank Racing, which won DP last year, was 7 laps down and has fought its way back up to just a lap behind the leader. They are driving with vengeance right now and treating every lap as if it were the final lap.

Fortunately, there have been no big shunts throughout the past 18 hours, however the race has had 12 full course cautions, with one of them related to fog taking nearly two hours!

Countdown to the 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona

The countdown to the Rolex 24 is in full swing. My Facebook account is already full of pictures from the event, Twitter is in high gear with Rolex 24 updates, and I'm already looking for creative ways to clear the deck for all other weekend activities that might get in the way of following the race. This is the race that pays the bills for much of the season for successful teams and there's everything at stake over the 24 hours! Today we follow one of the most successful teams at the event, Turner Motorsport, to find out what goes into preparing well for a 24-hour race.

Most of the preparation that goes in between the Roar Before the Rolex 24 and the time the trucks leave for Daytona is focused on making sure the cars' components will last the entire 24 hours. Fittings and hoses are replaced, driver comforts are tweaked, pedals are adjusted, cooling systems and air ducts inside the cabin are optimized. The team replaces all lexan and installs windshield tear-offs, as spares are very important for the race. Spare nose clips are built and vinylled to match. Electrical system are looked over very carefully, as they can make or break the race, especially at night. (Electrical failures could even be catastrophic.) Setups for wet and dry conditions, as well as cool and hot track are finalized.

Thoughts on the 'Grand American LeMans Series'

Last summer the historic merger of American LeMans Series (ALMS) and Grand Am(GA) sanctioning bodies was announced. While some were taken by surprise, others were not.

ALMS, despite having remained closely tied to its euro-centric roots, had been struggling financially in recent years. This has not only been true of ALMS. In Europe a LeMans series race actually had to be cancelled in 2012. ALMS cars however have always been more interesting, technologically advanced and the driver lineups have remained second to none. Economic downturns and the pullout of manufacturer-based teams in recent years have been part of this struggle. The bad effects of this were exponentially increased when ALMS boss Don Panoz cut the media deal with Disney’s ESPN that would ultimately sink the series, sealing its fate. Grand Am, plain Jane by comparison, wasn’t struggling at all. The business acumen of the France family had managed to keep the inferior field of racing platforms turning laps without the exodus of teams that had come upon ALMS.

So apparently, BFGoodrich just held a hush-hush launch at NOLA for its new g-Force Rival tire. Andy Hollis - Twelve-time SCCA Solo national champion, and instructor for the Evolution Performance Driving School, posted this on his Hollis Racing Facebook account:

Here today for the launch of the new BFGoodrich g-Force Rival. Got 10 laps back to back between this and the new Dunlop on an MX5 Cup car. Full second faster on the Rival, which was much easier to drive at the limit. Very forgiving. Z2 was much more peaky with a narrow window at the limit. Rival also loves to make noise.

And also, he was quoted in the same thread as saying:

This was a launch event- no longer a secret. Tomorrow Tire Rack will have a product page including sizes with ETA's up tomorrow for ore- order. Some sizes due first week of February, one of which is the 225/45/15.
My laps in the MX 5 were done yesterday as 1-off back to back comparison in the same car/ same driver on NOLA's full course- lap time around 2:08

Now that's some significant information to chew on! Sure enough, the tires are listed on the Tirerack this morning. No treadwear listed yet. Prices are approximately 20% higher than the Direzza II for most sizes, although interestingly, some very popular sizes are very close in pricing (245/40/17 is only $2 more expensive for the Direzza ZII).

2013 Dakar Rally: It's a Wrap!

Stéphane Peterhansel won in the overall again this year and that was his 10th victory in 22 years! He is to Dakar what Schumacher is to F1 and Loeb is to WRC. Just as remarkable, 6 of his 10 wins were on a bike and 4 in a car! He won in a Mini Coutryman this year and next year he is thinking of competing in a ... you guessed right -- a truck!!

Thoughts on Hennessey's 0-300 km Acceleration World Record

It's fascinating to think what a car making Bugatti Veyron power could do if it weighed a lot less. To find out, John Hennessey dropped a 1,244 horsepower twin-turbo Corvette V8 motor in a stretched Lotus Exige weighing only 2,743 lbs, which is less than two-thirds the weight of a Veyron SS. This Hennessey Venom GT just set a new 0-300 km Acceleration World Record!

Quick Facts:
  1. The Veyron SS makes 1,184 BHP. The Venom GT makes 1,244 BHP.
  2. The Veyron SS weighs 1,888 kg. The Venom GT weighs about 1,200 kg (2,743 lbs).
  3. The Venom GT hit 0-300 km/h (186 MPH) in just 13.63 seconds!
  4. The last 0-300 km/h record at 14.53 seconds was held by the Koenigsegg Agera R.
  5. The Hennessey reached 200 MPH in 14.51 seconds, which is also an unofficial record for a production car (unofficial because Guinness only measures speed records in km/h.)
  6. 0-60 mph can be reached in just 3.05 seconds, if you can make the tires stick. On subsequent tests, the Venom GT reportedly spun after the upshift to second gear and went off into the grass off the runway.

First Dunlop Direzza ZIIs Shipped to Customers!!

This is one of the very first sets of Dunlop Direzza ZIIs received by a customer in the U.S. As we mentioned in this 1/10/2013 update, "...various Direzza ZII sizes on the pre-order link have different Estimated Arrival dates ranging from as early as 1/20 to as late as 3/20." These 255/40/17s were received on 1/19!

The very sight of these tires makes my pulse quicken. These long, big blocks will go to really good use very soon. We will have first track reports on the Dunlop ZIIs in early March.

The GT86 Dilemma: FR-S Or BRZ?

To anyone familiar with performance driving in the Northeast, Steve Hazard is a household name. He always speaks his mind and has strong opinions - all part of the package that comes with his passion for performance driving. And he has the cred to back it all up: Steve is a multiple time BMW Class A Solo 2 Autocross Champion, 2005-2006 SCCA Regional National Tour BSP Champion, 2005 NERSCCA BSP Champion, and 2004 Mazda “Rev it up” National Finalist (1 of only 15 and beating 2,200 drivers in the process!) He competes with a very well set up Evo X MR but what piqued our interest is that he recently picked up an FR-S as his daily driver. We wanted to find why he chose it over the BRZ and here's what Steve had to share with us.

I drove both GT86 cars at Autocross events, as well as at dealerships last Summer. I've also read just about every review there is on the twins as well. They are gems, cars like this only come along every 20 years or so. The differences are minor, but they are there if you know what to look for.
For me, the decision was three-fold:

The BRZ understeers at post apex cornering, the FR-S OVERSTEERS! Why? It’s in the shock and spring settings. If I remember right the BRZ has stiffer springs and softer valved struts, the FR-S has softer springs and firmer dampers. We are talking a small difference and the BRZ can be  coaxed to overseer via the go pedal, or left-foot-brake, but it TLC to do that and the FR-S does not.

The FR-S reminds me of the old BMW 2002, and it's unfortunate that BMW missed the boat on this marketing niche. They blew it with the 1 series. I had high hopes that it was going to be a true lightweight platform like these F86 twins.

So the more experienced driver will appreciate the FR-S more and it can be a handful at the limit. It's nothing that quick hands and throttle input can’t correct! The Suburu version acts like a AWD Suburu: it plows! The understeer is light but it still plows at the limit.

Both of these cars can handle 9.5-10” rims under their wheel wells and I plan to run some D Force 18x9's with 255/35/18 RS3’s in class STX this year.

The 17x9 D Force wheels weigh just under 18 lbs 
and are a direct hubcentric fit on the FR-S and BRZ.

A Lotus Gone Wild: How an A/C Leak Turned into a 400-WHP Monster - Part IV

Here is Part IV of the amazing 400-WHP, 2,000 LB Lotus Exige S built by a regular guy without any tuning experience, all done in a small garage, without a lift, and in his spare time.

Part I of the series covered the background of the project and why the Toyota 2zz engine was not the best choice.

Part II focused on the research that went into the motor and why the Honda K-motor seemed like an intriguing choice.

Part III focused on some of the critically important setup choices: supercharger, exhaust, and intercooling.

Today's Part IV covers the Rotrex setup, the tear down, and pulling the motor out. Again, Chris is continuing the write-up in his own words --

The Rotrex bracket
The only Rotrex supercharger bracket for sale in the U.S. is designed to get mounted where the A/C compressor is located on the K-series engines. This is the typical design by Kraftswerks performance group. The design is awesome but unfortunately the very tight area on the Honda/Lotus setup makes it hard to install, plus I did want to keep my A/C! I was going to design my own supercharger bracket and have it machined but after some more research, I discovered Jaydee Quantum, an Aussie Arial Atom custom builder who’s even crazier than I am! It turned out he had developed the exact supercharger bracket that I required and he agreed to sell it. One less thing for me to manufacture while I continued my build! The Rotrex charger comes with its very own oil, reservoir, and filter, but required a custom oil cooler, which still needed to be sorted out.

Top 10 Things to Bring to the Track: 6. Spare Brakes

You could say this pad went to good use and then some!
Money that dealers and shops charge for changing brakes is one of the biggest car repair rip-offs. It's right up there with the "Check Engine" light, which we covered separately in this write-up. If it takes a hack "mechanic" like me under an hour to swap the brake pads on all 4 corners in my driveway, any shop should be able to do it on their lift in less time. Instead, most typically charge 3-4 hrs of labor for front and rear pads. OK, rotors do take another 5 minutes per corner, so the whole job is 1 1/2 hrs at most, which is still half the typical labor you'd get charged for.

More importantly, if you take your car to the track, you're going to eat up through the pads sooner or later some weekend (assuming you don't drive like a grandma), so you'll have to do learn to do brakes on your own or risk losing track time. Good news is, if you've ever replaced the brake pads on a bike, you'll probably be able to do pads on your car too. It's not that different.

This is your best tool. Find directions on how to change brakes for your make and model and a good forum to help you with your questions.

The Usual Suspects: jack, lug wrench, torque wrench: unless you can lift the car and hold it while working on it and also torque the lug bolts by hand, that is.

Turner Motorsport Announces 2013 Rolex 24 Driver Lineup

Fantastic news: Maxime Martin and Andy Priaulx (currently the most successful BMW drivers in Europe) are joining the Turner Motorsport team for the 2013 Rolex 24!

Bill Auberlen and Paul Dalla Lana will anchor the effort for a fourth consecutive year and, like last season; the 2013 Rolex 24 lineup will feature more BMW drivers from all over the world. Billy Johnson, Michael Marsal and Boris Said return and will be joined by Gunter Schaldach. OneHotLap is convinced that a driver named Gunter will know how to drive BMWs fast!

The newest BMW Motorsport driver, Maxime Martin, of Brussels, Belgium, will be making his North American racing debut at the Rolex 24. The 26-year old finished second in the 2012 BMW Sport Trophy after a strong season racing a BMW Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Endurance Series and a BMW ALPINA B6 GT3 in the ADAC GT Masters.

This scooter missed the Apex by two feet! Likely due to its skinny tires, which might have led to some undesired understeer. It could use wider tires for better traction, unless of course that bumps it up a class.

On a more serious note, what does your autocross club do for course walk? Does it allow any bikes or scooters? Does it allow drive-throughs on rainy days? Should it? How much time are you allowed to walk through the course and should there be a strictly enforced limit?

What Inspired THIS New Lexus IS?

Top Gear described the new Lexus IS as "...a setup that looks like a samurai sword has slashed open the edges of the bonnet opening."

The surface has so many creases, I get dizzy looking at it. I'd best describe the design as a cheap hooker wearing too much perfume. It's comforting to think it won't be seen much, if at all, at the track.

Dunlop Direzza ZII: The Lap Time Comparison We've All Been Waiting for!

I have been using the Dunlop Direzza on both of my cars since the tires first came out in 2008. I've been through a few sets over many track and autocross days for these 5 seasons and always felt that they Direzza Z1s were as close to perfect as a street tire could get. So understandably, a couple of months ago I shared how excited I was about the new Dunlop Star Spec Direzza ZII tires scheduled to come out in early 2013. Yes, just as exciting as a date with Scarlett Johansson, even if she was ready to show us her intimate tattoo. I guess that makes me a total tire geek and somehow I'm still not ashamed of it...

Needles to say, I was thrilled to see the Tirerack finally post their lap time comparison between the outgoing Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec and their replacement Dunlop Direzza ZII!

Here are some more thoughts on the Tirerack review:
  1. Even though the date on the review is November 19, 2012, it was posted on their website just today, January 11, 2013. The review and video were probably put together on 11/19 but the Tirerack held off from posting it until they had a confirmed availability date for the tires. I think that's sound business and it speaks of their conservative approach to providing reviews.

It's really enjoyable seeing such a great collection of M cars out in their natural habitat at the Nurburgring's GP track. It's awesome to see Adrian van Hooydonk (the designer credited with some of the best BMW designs in the past 15 years) take the trophy at 9:24!

So This Is Engadget's Idea of a Cool Car for the 2013 CES?

The 2013 Geekfest, better known as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is in full swing and ads for it have been popping up all over the Internet. At first glance, this ad for Engadget's coverage of the CES looks very much like the modern Windows Surface interface. (Ironically, Microsoft is not even attending the CES, which might actually make coverage for it more interesting.) The important question here is:

Why does the car in the ad look like a 1970s Lada?!

BMW CCA's Club Racing Glossary Explained (D-F)

Have you ever considered going club racing? Enticing idea and a ton of fun, right? So I took a spin through the 2012 BMW CCA Club Racing rule book to get an idea for what it would take to build a competitive car. Turns out it's a fascinating read! Starting on p.132 are some of the most amusing Racing Glossary definitions, quoted here word for word.

We covered letters A through C in the first part of the series. Today we are focusing on letters D through F. Enjoy!

Displacement (Engine) – Reciprocating engine: the swept volume of one cylinder times the number of cylinders.
OneHotLap says: Here's a good way to measure displacement: pour beer in the cylinders until they start overflowing, then measure the beer amount used net of spilled beer.

Door Panel – The trim panel that covers the inner shell of a door.
OneHotLap says: That's really good to know in case the racers cannot figure out where to find the door panel. Imagine the manufacturer had screwed up and put it on the exterior of the door!

You're guaranteed to go for a trip if you ever split up a rim like that at the track. In this case, the wheel failed because a brake caliper bolt came loose and the caliper wore through the wheel. You've just got to hope the gravel slows you down enough to avoid huge contact with the wall...

2013 Rolex 24 Hours Of Daytona: Night Testing

There's something mesmerizing about driving under the bright lights. The light at Daytona changes depending on where you are on the track, which makes it even more challenging for the drivers when compared to bright F1 tracks like Singapore.

Your eyes need to adapt to these changing conditions, which is all part of endurance racing at night. It is much harder to judge the braking points and your field of vision narrows so much faster around you at night.

Really Fun Race Video Onboard a Spec Miata at Daytona

This is one of the most fun racing videos I have seen anywhere. The race action is always wheel-to-wheel, very close and intense. Spec Miata is one of the racing series with lowest entry costs and highest fun quotient. Hard to beat that combo! Check out the really cool pass at 8:25. Make one small mistake, drop 5 positions. Get it all right and you move way up. So exciting!

Dakar Rally 2013 - Still The Most Dangerous Race in the World!

The 2013 Dakar Rally starts today, January 5 in Lima, Peru and finishes in Santiago, Chile on January 20.

As always, there are four classes of competitors: cars, motorcycles, quads and trucks. Although this rally is extremely difficult for all classes, those running on 2 wheels are exposed to most danger. The Dakar Rally is probably the world’s most dangerous race and the 2012 event was no exception. The 21-st death of a competitor in the history of the event was recorded in the very first 2012 stage. Motorcycle rider Jorge Andrés Boero died of a heart attack following a crash just a mile before the finish line in Stage 1. In a separate incident during stage 2, an ultralight aircraft of a father-son duo watching the race crashed and both died at the scene.

The flames edition Volvo wagon pictured here sports an additional 100 HP. That's PER FLAME! Rumors that these flames catch real fire at speeds > 75 mph have not been confirmed.

Oh, fair enough, New York City! Anyone can drive on straight roads. It takes skill to drive in Boston. Which is why the best drivers come from Boston. The bad drivers in Boston are all tourists anyhow. And if you have ever driven in Southern Italy, you know Bostonians are like gentleman drivers by comparison.

Did we clear this up now? As a Boston resident, I'm not even going to bring up this year's Giants or Jets season...

The Roar Before the Rolex 24 Hours Of Daytona: 2013 Edition

The Rolex 24 Hours Of Daytona kicks off the 2013 racing season. You know it's getting close to race time when the teams descend upon Daytona for the shakedown weekend, better known as the Roar before the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona. Grand-Am and ALMS are merging and will run as one series starting in 2014, so this year's Rolex 24 will be used to determine what cars and classes will be raced in the new single series.
