Go Home, Prius, You're Drunk

I'd love to hear what MPG the Prius gets at the autocross.
You think we can drop it into single digits??

Impact Barrier in the Middle of the Track!

From Bill W. who was in the driver seat:

Crazy race Sunday morning at NHMS. A major wind gust pushed an impact barrier onto the track. I never felt so scared then so relieved in such a short period of time! My data showed I hit it at 70MPH. Unfortunately the impact took out both mirrors and I was done for the morning.

Very Cool Video of a Mazda 787B at Le Mans

Hat Tip to Kamal R.

Here's a great onboard lap with Johnny Herbert at Le Mans for the 20th anniversary of Mazda 787B's victory at 24h of Le Mans. I love the throttle blip sounds! Watching Herbert work that really heavy steeiring wheel, I wonder how fit you'd have to be to do it for 2-3 hours at a time!

Best 2013 Performance Tire Poll

The votes are in. The Dunlop Direzza ZII opened a lead from the start and even though the BFG g-Force Rival tried hard to catch up, they did not have enough votes to pull it off. My impressions from talking to everyone at 5 autocross and 3 track days so far this season is that the Rivals may have slightly better dry traction and that they hold heat better. The Direzza ZIIs are likely to perform relatively better in the lower temps (your first run for the day) but given enough heat, the Rivals will stick marginally better. The Direzzas are better rain tires, slightly cheaper size for size, and since they are symmetrical and allow swapping side to side, will probably have better wear potential.

Share your experience with the ZIIs and Rivals so far this season - how do you like them and how do they compare? We will need a new poll that includes the Bridgestone RE11A very soon!

Rewind: 1967 Sunbeam Alpine

Some Brits get all the fame. The Beatles. Jaguar. Margaret Thatcher... Sure, by pop-culture they're now remembered in ways that makes them untouchable legends. That's not to say that these examples always made the best music, or cars, or leaders. As we know, everything has flaws. Lesser knowns bands, leaders and car companies were just as good, and often better. But as fate would have it, the world didn't write a big section for them in the history books.

How can you blame them? The world in 1967 was at a bit of a crossroads. General public opinion of the war was also about to get ugly with the Tet Offensive, and this in turn pretty much changed popular culture. Music changed from big band to rock and roll, movies began to push the envelope, and even the auto industry was on its way to big changes...

Sunbeam can track its ancestry all the way back to 1899, well before it was part of the Rootes group of cars. From that date right up to Sunbeam's financial demise in 1964, pre and post war examples have earned significant places in automotive history but are somehow forgotten. On July 2nd, 1923 at the French Grand Prix, a British car won for the first time. That car was a Sunbeam. 1925 saw the year when a production car first had dual overhead camshafts. That car was a Sunbeam. March 29th, 1927 was the first day a car would reach a velocity over 200mph. That car was a Sunbeam.

What Can Cause Your Wheel to Pop off at the Track

All 5 lug bolts busted off the hub under heavy braking

I had a fantastic student with a very unfortunate mechanical failure at speed at Watkins Glen last weekend. We were entering the braking zone for the toe of the boot ~ 90 mph when the front driver side wheel popped off and got stuck at a 45-degree angle inside the wheel well. We were just passengers at that point and went into the tirewall. Luckily, it happened at a turn that goes uphill, which slowed us down significantly before we hit the tire wall at < 30 mph. Failure analysis of the hub with broken studs revealed one stud failed in yield and was likely caused by a stress riser at the end of the hub thread. This is definitely one thing you may want to check in your car before your next track event.

Love the choice of Vivaldi's Four Seasons for the shoot but even autocross novices clip fewer cones than this. Maybe the car needs longer knives?

Happy Mother's Day!

Spotted in Concord, MA

Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you, Moms, for helping raise our kids,
And always giving them love to spare,
And putting up with our racing shenanigans,
And pretending you didn't see another tuning part we smuggled,
And listening to our car problems for hours,
And becoming experts on camber, caster, and toe
And cleaning all the grease we leave behind
And reminding us to be safe every day
And always showing us that you care
And loving us for who we are.
We can do what we do only because of You!

After the Track Party

This is what a dash looks like after a good track party. Luckily, there's 6 miles' worth of gas in the tank and the headlights are still working.
