Blindfold Slalom Test - The Case for Looking Ahead?

OK, so you can't look ahead when you are blindfolded. But the effect of not looking ahead while on the autocross course is similar: you get behind with your turns and fall off the race line. So try and Look Ahead, will ya? It will make you a better, faster, safer driver.

Why You Need To Be Careful with Selecting HPDE Clubs

It's no secret: all driving clubs are not the same. Some are better organized and run safer events where you will get decent track time and quality of instructing. Pick your club carefully and make sure you know what to expect from the event before you fork up the payment for it. A $200-a-day HPDE may end up costing you a lot more really fast...

Paul Walker’s Porsche Carrera GT Was Going 93 mph on Impact

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has determined that the Porsche Carrera GT in which Paul Walker and Roger Rodas died was travelling at 93 mph in a 45 mph zone at the point of impact. The rate of speed was determined using surveillance videos and electronic data retrieved from the car’s computers with the help of the carmaker. No technical issues were found with the car but it was still on its original 9-year old tires. Porsche Cars North America issued a statement in which they say the "vehicle had been altered from its original design state and had not been maintained properly" but "there is no evidence of any mechanical malfunction."

Porsche Carrera GT owners do not change their tires for 9 years, really?!

2014 Road Atlanta Majors - Danny Steyn Crashes in Turn 5

This is a very well written story by Danny Steyn, the driver involved in the accident, who walks us through what happened and his thoughts on it. There is plenty for all of us to learn from it.

(via Danny Steyn'sYoutube channel)
In Race 2, I was just pushing too hard and with two laps to go was closing in on 4th place and over drove the exit of turn 5 and put my right front wheel in the hollowed out gravel trap, and it sent me into the air head first at 78 MPH into the tire wall in T5.

I fortunately released the wheel at impact otherwise I would have broken both my thumbs as the wheel spun violently as I did a full pirouette in the air and came to rest exactly where the Porsche was struck in Saturday's horrific wreck.

It's amazing the thoughts that go through your mind when you are exposed like that. My first thought, at the instant of impact, was that I knew I that I had totaled my car, and that I would not be making the trip to VIR. I also knew I was a sitting duck in the impact zone and it was just matter of seconds before I would be T-boned by the pack.

The Saturday's wreck was firmly imprinted in my mind and I for the first time in my life I was fearful of being hit by someone else. Until that moment it had never worried me.

For what seemed like an eternity, but was actually just a few seconds, I was sitting there in the impact zone absolutely fearful screaming at the marshals to stop the cars from T-boning me, and then I looked down at the dash realized my car was still running, and miraculously I drove it out of the impact zone, and all the way to the pits.

When you see the impact you will NEVER believe how minimal the damage to the car was. Tire walls -- I LOVE YOU -- not in a million years did I think I would have had this kind of damage after that kind of hit. In fact there was nothing preventing me from completing the race, no tire rub, no broken radiator, nothing other than I was completely unaware of the lack of damage to the car.

Thanks to Tom for building a strong car, but I know I got lucky this time. Thanks to all my sponsors and supporters, and sorry to disappoint you this weekend. OPM Autosports, Rossini Racing Engines, Traqmate Data, Carbotech brakes and Adept Photo Studios.

Laps Completed:1. Cars Passed: 15!

Watch C.J. Wilson Racing's Stevan McAleer pass 15 cars on the opening lap of the Continental Tire Series race at Sebring. He started last on the grid because of a minor technical infringement in qualifying. McAleer and his co-driver Chad McCumbee more than made up for the penalty and worked their way up to a second-place finish in the Street Tuner class and from 57th overall to 19th after 2.5 hours of racing!

The 2014 Formula 1 Cars Are So... Blah.

So the 2014 Formula 1 cars are over 3 seconds slower than the 2013 cars. Yes, the Pirelli tires are harder and slower this year. RPMs are limited to 12k and even though the engines added a turbo, they still lost 2 cylinders. The cars are also making less downforce and even though they are faster in a straight line, they lose significant time in fast turns and under braking. And all of that might have been OK... if they didn't sound like a leaf blower with a dead squirrel stuck in it... Made me realize how much I miss the V12 engines - here's a comparison so you can hear for yourself.

2014 Formula 1 Rules Explained in Just 3 Minutes

This is a must-see video for any race fan. 2014 brings a ton of new technical regulations and Red Bull's drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel do a great job explaining what's different helped by compelling visuals. It's not uncommon for the new designs to be slower than the outgoing year's because of new restrictions but they almost always catch up in lap times after a few races. The only question for this year's chassis is how long it will take to do that.

Why It's Not A Good Idea to Fight The Car...

If it looks like the car will go off, it's much better to go off straight than go off sideways in order to minimize the possibility of rolling it over. And always, both feet in.

C/D News: OneHotLap Driver Joins Terrible Race Team

Ann Arbor MI -- Today Car and Driver reported that OneHotLap, against the advice of mental-health professionals, will compete in the 24 Hours of LeMons -- a wheel-to-wheel car race for heaps that cost $500 or less. OneHotLap's team -- the unpromisingly named "Park Bench Racing Team (PBRT)" -- hits your local track on 05/10/2014 to 05/11/2014, where therapists and junkyard operators are already standing by.
One relative, on condition of anonymity, described OneHotLap's family as "...saddened but unsurprised" by the news. "Unfortunately, we've come to expect such lapses in judgment," the source told C/D.
Friends, coworkes, and relatives interested in staging an intervention and/or watching OneHotLap do something incredibly embarrassing can find more information at Car and Driver's LeMons minisite or LeMons' race info page.

A 1969 Camaro at Sebring SVRA

It's very cool that you can take a 45-year old car and drive it so fast around Sebring. This 1969 Camaro was made the year Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, the Beatles performed their last concert together, Woodstock was held, the first Monty Python was produced, and Easy Rider was one of the top new movies.

Of Stance and Camber

OK kids, can we settle this once and for all?
Stance is for little boys who play with their cars in the sandbox.
Camber is for grown up men who race cars.

Epic Photoshop!

Radical Driving Experience at Monticello: $4,900 for 2 Days

Driving a Radical for two days at Monticello may well be the ultimate driving experience. It offers 6 hours of track time a day and coaching from some of the top racing drivers in the country. Yes, the price of $4,900 per person is prohibitive for most but there must be enough takers for Monticello to offer 4 school in 2014:

Tuesday & Wednesday, June 17-18
Wednesday & Thursday, July 9-10
Tuesday & Wednesday, August 12-13
Wednesday & Thursday, September 3-4

Now let's see how much I can get for one of my kindeys. You really only need one to live, right?
