Onboard OneHotLap's Z4 M Coupe at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park

June 17, 2014, Session 1

This was my first event at Thompson. It's a fun little track where you will stay very busy over its 1.7-mile layout. There are many "compromise" turns I love it that you can take different lines through most of them depending on your speed, weather, track condition, traffic, etc. Detailed tutorial on how to drive Thompson to follow shortly, stay tuned.

Best Thompson Track Map Yet

This is the first Thompson track map with numbered turns I have seen so far. It hangs in their training room and it seems like it has not made its way into their website yet. The red line represents the 1.7-mile course and the grey sections replace turns 4, 7, and 8 in the 1.5-mile configuration. Thompson is a short but fun track with many compromise turns. It reminds me of Calabogie on a small scale.

Here is the onboard footage with commentary of the record lap. 132.298 mph AVERAGE speed!
You must be ready to lose your life to pull this off but I can't even begin to imagine to thrill of doing it.

A True Heartwarming Story: The OneHotLap Evo Gets A Wing!

Long-term OneHotLap supporter EJ proudly announced the arrival of his Evo's new wing:
This picnic table seats 4 adults and ensures any spilled drinks drain off the front of the table and not into your lap.

Some of his friends were impressed:
Woah, took my breath away for a second!

Some were concerned:
You're gonna need a bigger garage.

But EJ had solutions:
They make 'em bigger but this is as large as SCCA rules allow. I can't even imagine. And yes, I'm either going to need to remove it when parked for long periods or fab some sort of padding for the driver's side so as not to threaten passersby leaving or entering the garage.

Other friends decided to help...
Just drape a tarp across it and park outside; it doubles as a carport.

... and encourage:
At least no one will be mistaking you for a middle-aged guy anymore!

EJ was relieved:
Guys are always asking if it's my son's car.

Other friends gave it considerable thought:
You say....any spilled drinks drain off the front of the table and not into your lap. but it says One Hot Lap, so that indicates that any spilled drinks will land in your lap.

A very knowledgeable friend suggested that a VARIS MITSUBISHI EVO WIDE BODY KIT designed for TIME ATTACK USE ONLY would complement the wing well.

Other more practical friends suggested:
dat wing...can also serve as a kayak holder or surfboard

OR
a ladder rack...

OR
emergency stretcher for EMT.

A Honda S2K owner admired the
Classic Ricer Look.....

Another friend inquired if EJ had
borrowed blade from Mitsubishi MM35B

Having his plot foiled, EJ hit back:
Playah haters...

The well-intentioned S2K owner was still trying to help:
That is one huge wing, fella....you gunna get the rest of the kit installed up front before you track it at Albany International Airport ?

EJ was not amused:
Nah, that's for those FWD weenies.

At first, the S2K owner started taunting...
FWD ...AWD....same thing right ?? When are you going to try the REAL RWD configuration ? Come on over to the dark side .....

... but then he felt compassion:
This might work better for a BIG wing...the BUMPER mount. I got a feeling that with 400+ HP you will be putting so much stress on your trunk it will result in Warp-age. I been there done that, no use in hurting pretty little Blue One Hot Lap.

An experienced tech from Rennessy Fabrication chimed in:
Yup, transfer load into the structure instead of flimsy decklid is always better. But EJ likes his creature comforts like easy access to the trunk.

Other friends were starting to pile in:
Holy spoiler batman!

Then everyone got together and figured out the best solution for the WING:

Turn it into a breakfast bar and hang their panties on the sides of it!

A caring friend found yet another great use for the versatile WING: Garage flagpole!

"EJ fully deserves the You Are #1 flag", lamented said friend and asked One Hot Lap to weave the flag design into its logo.

We firmly believe that everyone deserves to have supportive friends like EJ's and most happily obliged:

You truly are #1, EJ!

Best Thompson Onboard Video Yet

This is the best Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park onboard video yet. It is great to see the course driven at speed by an experienced driver for the first time. I find it very encouraging to see that Thompson has added some much needed safety features around the pavement (see my original concerns here) and also some curbing that outlines the track and makes it move drivable. Let's shoot for real red and white curbing for next season, Thompson. Can't wait to drive the track next week. More to follow shortly.

How NOT To Race!

Hat Tip to Naid N.

This race has everything that a properly run race should not. It's run by the 750 Motor Club, which seems to be the exact opposite of FIA -- that by itself is not a bad thing, except it does not enforce any decent racing rules in its 'Stock Hatch' series. The Snetterton, UK race features stripped out Citroen Saxos (60 HP, 1750 lbs stock) with drivers who seem to have descended upon the track straight from a demolition derby. Watch the entire 3 minutes, it only gets better as the race goes on.

One Very Fast ChumpCar 318ti!

Here's a great ChumpCar video sent in by Phil E. In his words:

This was the first laps around Watkins Glen on Friday. I got it down to steady 2:24s with 2:22 as our fast lap. This was a new build and this was the first outing, so suspension was still unsorted. The weight without fuel or driver is 1,820lbs. Pictures attached show perfect corner weights with 16 gallons of fuel (1,944lbs). The motor is an M52 (OBD1 converted), TRM-tuned with 21.5-lb injectors. No dyno yet but likely 200 HP. ChumpCar's MPV for the 318ti is $430 and motor swap only adds $50 but I had some adjustable shocks and aluminum radiator and Lexan hatch, so I just went to class EC (and a couple of buddies went EC too for this race). We built it for Chump and also the new AER series. We led overall for a while but dropped to 3rd overall after a late fuel stop. Car has a 22-gallon fuel cell, M3 front struts and brakes, a ZF box, and a medium case 3.25 LSD diff with e36 dual horn cover mod. 17" wheels.

Cheers,
Phil E.

Why 24 Hours of LeMons Is So Much Fun

In a typical road race (F1, DTM, Tudor, you name it), you have maybe 10-15 meaningful passes the entire race. In a typical 24 Hours of LeMons race, you alone can make that many passes each lap. Here's how G.J. Dixon from the B class winning Team Farfrumwinnin does it at the May 10-11 2014 24 Hours of Lemons round at NJMP Thunderbolt.

Life Decisions: What To Do When The Tire Trailer Is Too Small?

Hat Tip to track nut EJ who made this Note to self: remind trailer fabricator to build in an extra few inches of width to accommodate every manufacturer's interpretation of "285" width tires.

EJ's friends have showed resolute support and offered these great tips to help him with this huge problem:

"I don't see any problem."

"Looks like million dollar Tetris."

"If you put a wing on there it should work."

"Buy a crappy pop-up trailer and tear it down to the frame. Boom -- instant tire trailer!"

"Let the air out of them and maybe........."
